['wɪnzə kɑːsl], königliches Residenzschloss am nordwestlichen Stadtrand von New Windsor, in der County Berkshire, England. Um 1070 wurde von Wilhelm dem Eroberer eine Burg mit Erdwällen und Holzbauten angelegt; erste Steinbauten entstanden um 1165. Kern der Anlage ist ein im 19. Jahrhundert erhöhter Keep (Middle Ward) aus dem letzten Viertel des 12. Jahrhunderts. Zu Beginn des 13. Jahrhunderts fügte man unter König Heinrich III. den westlichen Hof an; der obere Hof wurde im späten 14. Jahrhundert zur königlichen Residenz mit spätgotischen Türmen ausgebaut. 1474 begann der Bau der Saint George's Chapel (Netzgewölbe 1528 eingezogen). Unter Karl II. wurde die Schlossanlage 1660-85 umgebaut und erhielt ihre barocke Ausstattung; im frühen 19. Jahrhundert romantisierende Umgestaltung. - In der Suite von Staatsgemächern mit historischer Ausstattung liegen u. a. das Porzellankabinett und die Gemäldegalerie; im Schloss wird ferner eine Sammlung von Handzeichnungen aus der Royal Library aufbewahrt. Teile von Windsor Castle wurden 1992 durch einen Großbrand zerstört beziehungsweise schwer beschädigt (Wiederaufbau und Restaurierung erfolgten bis 1997).
